Lesson 40: I am blessed as a Son of God
In Lesson 40, we learn about why this lesson focuses more on reminding us to do the lesson that it does on actually describing the lesson.
One of the interesting aspects of this brief lesson is how often we are reminded to practice the lesson.
“You are urged to attempt this [every 10 minute] schedule.”
“Adhere to it whenever possible.”
“Do not miss a practice period [simply] because [you aren’t in a position to close your eyes.]”
In fact, there is more in this lesson about remembering to practice it than there is about the lesson itself.
Which is really the point about Lesson 40. To honestly acknowledge when we don’t remember to do the lessons.
And while we may think we forget because we get busy or our memory isn’t great - the truth of the matter is that we forget because we are afraid. The ego will do anything and everything to keep us from looking within.
The ego unconsciously tells us that looking within is dangerous. Within spells the end. And to a certain extent, that’s true. Looking within would mean the end - the end of the ego. And that’s why the ego is so vigilant for keeping us mindless.
When we do return to our mind and make the choice against the ego, we realize exactly what this lesson is teaching: we are blessed as a Son of God. And in this state, we do indeed feel happy, peaceful, loving, and contented.
I am blessed as a Son of God.
W-pI.40.1. Today we will begin to assert some of the happy things to which you are entitled, being what you are. No long practice periods are required today, but very frequent short ones are necessary. Once every ten minutes would be highly desirable, and you are urged to attempt this schedule and to adhere to it whenever possible. If you forget, try again. If there are long interruptions, try again. Whenever you remember, try again.
W-pI.40.2. You need not close your eyes for the exercise periods, although you will probably find it more helpful if you do. However, you may be in a number of situations during the day when closing your eyes would not be feasible. Do not miss a practice period because of this. You can practice quite well under any circumstances, if you really want to.
W-pI.40.3. Today's exercises take little time and no effort. Repeat the idea for today, and then add several of the attributes you associate with being a Son of God, applying them to yourself. One practice period might, for example, consist of the following:
I am blessed as a Son of God.
I am happy, peaceful, loving and contented.
Another might take this form:
I am blessed as a Son of God.
I am calm, quiet, assured and confident.
If only a brief period is available, merely telling yourself that you are blessed as a Son of God will do.
