Empire of the Mind
Picture yourself standing atop a mountain, surveying an endless empire stretching to every horizon. Vast territories filled with fertile valleys, gleaming cities, limitless resources. This realm recognizes no boundaries, acknowledges no external authority. Within its borderless borders, you possess absolute sovereignty—more powerful than any earthly ruler.
This empire exists. It's called the mind.
Yet most of us live like bewildered peasants wandering through our own kingdom, convinced we're powerless subjects at the mercy of circumstances. We believe various events determine our mood, other people control our peace, and bodily conditions dictate our well-being. We've forgotten we're the sovereign ruler of this infinite domain.
How did such amnesia occur? We surrendered our throne to the wish for selfhood, otherwise known as the ego. This cunning pretender convinced us we're merely inhabitants in a hostile land, buffeted by forces beyond our control. Under its tyrannical rule, we've become refugees in our own empire, begging for scraps of happiness from a world that seems to withhold them.
Consider the absurdity. The mind that can conceive of galaxies, compose symphonies, and comprehend love somehow believes it's powerless against an angry email or unkind person? The awareness that witnesses all experience somehow thinks it's victim to what it observes?
The ego's greatest deception is convincing us we're small, separate, and vulnerable. Yet beneath this false identity lies the truth of our limitless nature. As A Course in Miracles reveals: "You are as God created you. All else but this one thing is folly to believe."
Reclaiming our rightful throne doesn't require overthrowing external forces. It simply entails remembering who we've always been: the omnipresent monarch of an empire that extends far beyond any physical boundaries.
