From self-consciousness to Self Consciousness
Few phrases carry as much quiet dread as “I’d be too self-conscious.” We say it as though consciousness of the self were a condition to be avoided. Something that makes us smaller, more exposed, painfully visible.
And yet, when we examine what’s actually happening in those moments, consciousness has very little to do with it. We’re not observing the self. We’re drowning in it. Lost in a cascade of worry about how we appear, what others think, whether we measure up. The self isn’t being examined. It’s running the show, unchecked and unnoticed, precisely because no one is watching.
This is the great irony. We call it self-conscious when we are anything but. We are self-absorbed. Self-identified. Self-immersed. Even the person who despises who they are has placed a me squarely at the center of loathing.
But what if actual consciousness of the self were possible? Not the embarrassed variety, but something far more interesting. A gentle noticing: “Oh. There’s this persistent little me, making its familiar racket. Going on about this and that.”
That simple recognition changes everything. Because the moment we notice the self, we’ve stepped into something the self cannot touch. There is now an awareness observing the whole production. And that awareness isn’t embarrassed. It isn’t anxious. It isn’t trying to be anything at all. It simply sees.
As A Course in Miracles reminds us: “Holding our self from Self, as all illusions do, we deny our holy heritage.” The self we’ve been so consumed by was never the whole story. Something far larger has been quietly present all along, patiently waiting for us to notice.
Perhaps the most self-conscious person in the room is closer to freedom than they realize. They’ve already sensed there’s a self worth looking at. The only remaining step is to notice who is doing the looking.
Join me in Thursday’s class where we’ll explore this journey from self-consciousness to Self Consciousness and discover the liberating peace of aware presence. I look forward to seeing you then.
