It's Impossible
Today we’ll use a little wordplay to discuss the metaphysics of A Course in Miracles.
The course teaches that in truth, we have never separated from our home in heaven. Everything we think of as reality is nothing but an enormous projection, an illusory belief system taken seriously.
Much like a dream at night that seems so real, so significant, and so consequential. Until we wake up and realize it was nothing.
But true Reality, that state of infinite oneness, can never be anything it is not. It is impossible for duality - separate identities - to exist within the timeless realm of unity.
Literally impossible.
And yet, we’ve mis-read, misunderstood, and grammatically (and gravely) mistaken that concept of impossible to be I’m possible.
That tiny, mad idea - that I’m possible - is what led to everything we believe real. What we consider to be life, family, relationships, drama, joy, sorrow, sickness, death, afterlife, reincarnation, and so forth are all projected descendants of that original I’m possible.
I’m possible is the tiniest droplet of water proclaiming itself to be the ocean, as the Little Garden section of Chapter 18 so eloquently illustrates. The belief that we - an extension of infinite oneness, of perfect love - could actually be these limited and limiting bodies is a preposterous idea “too ridiculous for anything but to be laughed away.” (T-27.VIII.5)
Yet “how serious do [our lives] now appear to be!”
Because we’ve taken the idea of I’m possible seriously. In fact all our troubles, all our pain, all our suffering are the result of this misguided belief.
Thankfully, there’s another way of seeing. One that recognizes the impossibility of I’m possible while at the same time understanding the certainty of infinite joy. Instead of these small selves we each believe to be “me,” we can reconnect with our true Self and experience the complete cessation of all pain.
Being separate from perfect peace and all-encompassing love is impossible. Only our misguided thoughts have convinced us otherwise. Yet returning awareness to that blissful truth is not only possible, it is absolutely assured.
Join me in Thursday’s class where we’ll explore the nature of I’m possible and contrast that with the certitude of perfect peace. I look forward to seeing you then.
