Advancing on a spiritual journey is a bit like potty-training a pet. In the early stages there is a lot of messiness. Progress is slow. Recriminations abound. And if managed poorly, you may end up abandoning the entire endeavor. Much to the dismay of all parties involved.
Yet handled properly, the results are joyfully sublime. Let’s explore such a process.
Patience is paramount as we begin. Expecting immediate results is not only unrealistic, but highly dilutive to forward momentum. Removing all demands of deadline creates a comforting space for expansion.
Productivity and personal-growth experts have long proposed a system over goal mindset. The challenge with any goal is that you are continually failing until it’s achieved. Whereas with a focus on the methodology, and developing effective techniques for consistent practice, goal completion naturally ensues.
Perhaps most crucial is gentleness in the face of setback. What good comes of disappointment and anger, whether directed inward or out? A dejected person or puppy might behave as coerced, but what of peace? A kind, light-hearted demeanor fosters enthusiastic transformation.
As messes inevitably pile up, considerate cleaning removes the instinct to repeat. Which is accomplished not through begrudgingly scrubbing the soilings but by kindly acknowledging the mistake. Tidying the aftermath with an easy grace prevents permanent stains from forming. Troubles dissolved into a fine mist of nothingness.
Cultivating compassionate attention to this care-full process confidently leads to guided growth. The environment conspires willingly. As we read in A Course in Miracles:
Your purpose is nursed by angels, surrounding the ground on which you stand. Success is guaranteed. (T-19.IV.C.9, W-pI.183.2, T-8.V.4)
This symbolically lovely prose from the course providing supportive solace through the learning progression. Success is guaranteed. We need but avail ourselves of these teachings. Contentment emerges effortlessly.
Join me in Thursday’s class where we’ll discuss techniques for transcending the inexorable difficulties attendant with the pursuit of peace. I look forward to seeing you then.
Excellent analogy Anthony! It helps to be a dog lover too or a God lover as the case may be.
