The Permission Slip
Remember those elementary school permission slips? Small pieces of paper that transformed ordinary afternoons into extraordinary adventures. Without that signed document, you remained behind while classmates explored the science museum or attended a theater performance. The slip itself held no magical properties—just ink on paper—yet it granted passage to experiences beyond the classroom walls.
We've carried this belief system into adulthood, convinced that happiness requires similar authorization. Permission from circumstances to feel content. Approval from others to experience worth. Clearance from the world to know peace.
"I'll be happy when I get the promotion." "I'll feel peaceful once this relationship improves." "I'll know joy after these health issues are resolved." Each statement reveals our unconscious certainty that serenity must be sanctioned by external conditions.
But what if we've fundamentally misunderstood the permission process?
The ego mind operates like an overzealous hall monitor, demanding we present proper documentation before accessing our natural state of well-being. It insists that peace is earned, not inherent. That joy is conditional, not constant. That love must be justified by favorable circumstances.
Yet consider this radical possibility: you already possess every permission slip you need. Not tucked away in some future achievement or external validation, but residing in this very moment as your essential nature.
A Course in Miracles teaches that we are the dreamer of the world, not a dream figure. We are the one granting or withholding permission from ourselves. Every moment we choose which authority to recognize—the ego's demanding documentation or love's simple invitation to remember what we've always been.
Perhaps it's time to stop waiting for the world's signature and recognize that awareness itself has already signed off on our freedom.
Join me in Thursday's class where we'll explore how to reclaim our natural authorization for peace and discover the profound liberation that follows. I look forward to seeing you then.
